Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The Mexican Army defeated the larger French army. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage. The Irving Marathon Running series is hosting two Cinco de Mayo themed events. On May 5th they will host a social run to energize everyone for Fiesta de Mayo Half Marathon on May 22nd. The Social Run will begin between 6 and 6:30 p.m. at the Toyota Music Factory and the racecourse will be around Lake Carolyn. Mexican Sugar will start their festivities at 4 p.m. with tequila tastings, a smoke and mirror selfie station and a nitrogen margarita station. The fun continues through the night with DJs and live music until 10 p.m.
Toyota Music Factory is hosting their Cinco de Mayo celebration from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant and entertainment venue will have a taco eating contest, Latin market, Mariachi bands, and Folklorico dancing. The Dallas Museum of Art has set up their Frida Kahlo pop-up at the Toyota Music Factory. The pop-up features reproductions of two of Kahlo’s paintings and will be on display until June 20th.
